The Pongal day every year is celebrated as Makara Sankranthi as a very special day in various parts of India. Pongal as colloquially known in tamil nadu this day is very significant in terms of astrology !!!

What is Sankranthi ?

On this day the sun enters the house capricon. In Sanskrit the house Capricorn is called as makaram, hence the name Makara Sankranthi. In fact Sankranthi is a word which is used to just describe the transit and each month is a sankaranthi based on which astrological house sun transits into.

Then why is Makara Sankranthi so celebrated ?

As per the kaala purusha tattva of astrology the house capricon is the 11th house in the cycle. Eleventh house signifies benefits and it is called as the house of profits. Sun is the chief of solar system and traditionally it is believed that the presence of the lord sun in the 11th house of the cycle gives a significant profits and also paves way for all our desires. The house capricon is ruled by saturn who is responsible for profession and hardwork, so the presence of sun in the house of Saturn as a 11th place is said to bring fortune in profession and in any ventures undertaken for a good cause.

Makara sankaranthi is a bright day to start any venture and continue working on the same for the year. On the day of makara sankaranthi it is very auspicious to recite a shloka called “Adithya Hrudhayam”. A shloka taught by sage Agasthya to lord rama. We can also visit to the temples of lord vishnu as the sun is revered as a Vishnu swaroopa.
