Time management has always been an issue with everyone regardless of profession. When we think of time management we also think of procrastination as an issue. We think it is because of procrastination, time management is lacking.

Is procrastination the real problem for time management ??

|| Guru Shambavi of Tantralayam ||

No, in reality time management is a macro concept including many aspects to it. Procrastination is something which arises from our disinterest to do something. Time management is a problem we face when we want to do a set of things but could not complete. Procrastination arises because there is no consequence attached to it if we dont complete something, otherwise we would not have procrastinated on the first place. We worry a lot on time management because there are strings attached to tasks if not completed within a time frame will cause trouble to us or we may loose some benefits. In this perception the real problem for time management is not procrastination, there are other main reasons for time management.

FOCUS

The first and foremost of issue is our focus. Our focus bracket or to put it in simple words, our ability to focus on a task or subject or issue for a longer time is called focus bracket. If our focus bracket is short then we tend to start faster, slow down in the middle and drag a lot on the end. This results in total unavailablity or blankness for a while till we fresh up and gain back the focus bracket. The longer the focus bracket the more versattile we could be with tasks. Our focus bracket is directly proportional to our receptivity. Without receptivity we might loose track of the context of the things we are doing.

PRIORITY

prioritization is the key factor for the lack of time management. There are two issues with prioritisation. One is we tend to think everything has the equal importance at the same time. Another is that we tend to prioratise based on the difficulty of the task. Both the approach would only make things difficult. In fact either of the above said only slows us down. It is impossible to have multiple tasks with same priority at the same time. When we have such tasks in our bucket it only means we have already confused ourselves. prioritization should always include whats the most needed now rather than to confuse with whats on the queue. Whats on the queue and whats needed the most now will never go together. we need to find solution to cover up whats on the queue and finish whats the most needed now. The very point of priority is to take care of what matters the most now, but what happens is that we start worrying about the queue when we need to take care of immediate needs.

ABSENT MIND

I would say this the “elephant in the room”. The major reason why time management is worse with many is because of this absent mindedness. At times we tend to think of things in past or happenings in the past and carry away by the memmories attached to it resulting in the lag on whatever we are doing in present. This infact spoils our own emotional balance and also contributes in a negative way to the quality of work we do or deliver.

The above reasons are few things which contributes mainly to the lack of time management. Time management is an integral part of life irrespective of the profession or the phase of life. As the famous proverb goes “Time is precious than Gold”. The main context of the proverb is that we earn, build, do everything just because we have time on this earth, without time there is nothing possible atleast in this dimension of our existance. Meditation helps improving the focus. Absent minded can only be solved through speaking up. Do not dump yourself with unwanted perceptions open up and have a dynamic pace in life. The flowing river never gets contaminated.
