(Iconography of goddess dhumavati)

Dhumavati is one of the prominent forma in the set of dasa maha vidhya. The form of dhumavati is often represented as an old lady with a frightening face, wearing a white saree. This maha vidhya is not practiced a lot and is not prevalent and famous as tripurasundari. In one aspect tripurasundari is viewed as the light and dhumavati is viewed as an extreme dark.

What does dhumavati actually represent ?

The maha vidhya dhumavati represents the quality of polishing the self. To put in simple words, in order for us to grow we need to loose our negatives and the things which makes us dim. This phase of loosing what doesn’t fit us is a bit fearful process because a fear of “what are we going through” haunts us for a while till we reach the polished state. Even though this is a positive transit, we feel a tremendous despair in this transition. This stage happens in everyones life but the point is not everyone go through it completely. Out of fear people get back to the old status just to feel the comfortability, which in reality makes us bad and tampers our growth. This section of despair is the zone of dhumavati, who polishes as a better person. Soothing rubs don’t polish. In dasa maha vidhya dhumavati is a form of shakthi symbolising the polishing segment of life.
